Market cap

The price of every share added up: what the stock market says the company is worth.

Worked example · a round-number company

Share price$50.00×Shares200M=Market cap$10.0B

How to read it

↕Neither higher nor lower is better. Bigger isn't better; it tells you scale. Large companies tend to be steadier, small ones can grow faster.

Keep in mind

  • Shares come from the latest SEC filing, so a buyback or new issue since then isn't counted yet.
  • It ignores debt and cash; enterprise value adds them.
